AIA Annual Convention

AIA Event
July 29, 2009 - August 1, 2009

This year, AIA Florida is introducing the “Bring a Mentor” program as part of the 2009 Annual Convention.  This great new program is a way for us to continue our strategic planning vision of building the pipeline and reaching out to students.  We currently have about 20 University of South Florida architecture students interested in participating, but they need a mentor.

That’s where you can help.  As a member of the AIA Florida board of directors and your local component’s leadership, you can make a difference in the profession, your life, and the life of a future architect and “Bring a Student” to the Convention. Your student will be your shadow for the duration of the Convention, and attend CE sessions, the tradeshow and the President’s Design Awards Reception.  You will also receive a 10% discount on your registration if you participate in this program, and your student will attend for free (hotel expenses are not included).

If you would like to participate in this mentorship program and mentor a USF architecture student, or add your name to a list of available mentors for other university students, please contact Lisa O’Donnell at (850) 222-7590, or lodonnell@aiafla.org.

AIA Gainesville Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament

AIA Gainesville Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament
Joe Garcia AIA stands next to the banner for this years Scholarship Golf Tournament held on April 17th at the Haile Plantation Golf and Country Club in Gainesville. This year celebrates the 25th anniversary of AIA Gainesville chapter raising money for a scholarship to the University of Florida College of Architecture. Over $25,000 dollars has been donated into an endowment that provides a perpetual scholarship to architecture graduate students. AIA national matches our donation to double the amount received by the college each year. Joe is one of the chapter's founding members of the scholarship tournament, and has continued to provide outstanding leadership in his "labor of love" for the tournament (and for golf, of course). Without his tireless efforts, this tournament would not be the success it is year after year.

Design Competition

The Florida Foundation for Architecture is sponsoring a program to address the issue of school population growth through the creation of a series of modular classrooms called the “Sunshine State Modular Classrooms”.The design competition is focused on AIA Florida emerging professionals.  Emerging professionals are defined as architecture students attending any of the Schools of Architecture in the state, AIA Associate members, and AIA Architect members licensed less than 10 years.

The Competition is aimed at fostering research associated with the design of modular classroom units that can serve K through 12 student populations throughout the state of Florida. Solutions are being sought to address the design parameters of affordability, sustainability and structural durability within the Florida context. The design shall also address the “fluctuations in district populations” by providing a “modular” design solution which can be pre-manufactured and delivered to a school site and set up within weeks.

All Associate AIA members were emailed this invitation periodically, and the response has been great.  The deadline to register is Monday, April 27.  Please forward this invitation to emerging professionals in your firm that might be interested in this opportunity.  Cash prizes are available for the top three winners!
